Libraries and bookstores were once filled with ad-free, curated and annually revised material written by experts. We trusted in a small handful of media companies and invested time consuming their limited content. Sometimes we even liked the ads, and it was easy to ignore the noise.
Democratized
The internet revolutionized publishing. Independently created content became fast, free and addictive. Portals were created to provide instant access to relevant information in the rapidly expanding sea of disassociation. The second generation brought social media, online retailers, streaming content and smartphones that made it all portable. The digitization of everything, available all the time. Then it became a land grab.
The corporatization of content came swiftly, monetizing inconspicuously at first, with ads and subscriptions supported by tracking and data collection. Consumers collectively and willingly donated their privacy. Analyzing consumer behavior made it easier to target and efficiently capitalize on everything. And a handful of tech companies controlled the content.
Consumer Product
Our devices started listening and consumers became the product. Companies advertise exactly what we want, when we want it, at the price we will pay. They push tolerance boundaries by gradually increasing exposure until normalized. They split test everything to determine how fast and how far it can go. Ads are personalized, longer, more frequent and included with your paid subscription.
Less than a dozen tech companies are collectively responsible for about 20% of the entire market value of all U.S companies. This handful of companies controls the internet and knows everything about you.
Money Talks
Big tech ignored decentralization of data using blockchain but doubled down on AI. The exponential monetization potential of machine learning on consumer data analytics is the next gold rush.
Eliminating cable TV and print media turned out to be relatively easy. The wallet-siphoning internet will be harder to unplug. Welcome to Web 3.0. Please take everything. And thank you.
